John Paul II

(b. 1920)
   Pope.
John Paul was born Karol Jozef Wojtyla in Wadowice, Poland. He was educated at the Jagiellonian University and was a member of the resistance during the Nazi occupation of Poland. He was ordained in 1946 and, after a career as a parish priest and university professor, he was made a Bishop in 1958, Archbishop of Cracow in 1964 and Cardinal in 1967. After the thirty-three-day Pontificate of Pope john paul i, he was elected, as the first Polish Pope, in 1978. He has made a series of visits world-wide, but, perhaps because of his experience of Poland under Communism, he has remained unbending in his opposition to liberation theology and the politicisation of the priesthood. In addition, he is a staunch traditionalist in ethical matters; he is uncompromising in his condemnation of artificial contraception and abortion and he is unenthusiastic about the idea of women priests. He survived an assassination attempt in 1981 and is increasingly seen as a bastion of conservative values in a transitional world.
